AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has publicly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the newly appointed chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) for endorsing a Hindu-only staffing policy at the iconic Tirumala temple. Owaisi’s comments follow a statement made by TTD Chairman B.R. Naidu on October 31, which asserted that all staff members at the temple, dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, should be Hindus.
In a post shared on social media platform X, Owaisi pointed out the contradiction between the TTD’s policy and the NDA government’s recent efforts to ensure the inclusion of non-Muslims on Waqf Boards and Councils. He remarked, “Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams’ chairman says that only Hindus should work in Tirumala. But Modi govt wants to make it mandatory for there to be non-Muslims in Waqf Boards & Waqf Council. Most Hindu Endowment laws insist that only Hindus should be its members. What is good for the goose should be good for the gander, no?”
Naidu has also indicated plans to engage with the Andhra Pradesh government to discuss the employment status of workers from other religions, with options including reassignment to different government departments or voluntary retirement schemes (VRS).

Owaisi’s remarks highlight the ongoing debates surrounding religious representation and policy in India, reflecting a growing concern among various communities regarding the implications of such policies on social cohesion and inclusivity. The discussions come at a time when India is grappling with questions of secularism and the representation of minority groups within governmental and religious institutions.
The push for a Hindu-only staff policy at Tirumala temple raises significant questions about the intersection of religion and employment in public institutions, particularly in a country that prides itself on its diverse cultural fabric. As the discourse continues, it remains to be seen how these policies will evolve and impact the broader socio-political landscape in India.
