PIL asks government to form district Wakf protection and coordination committees

The Telangana High Court division bench, comprising Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice Surepalli Nanda, on Wednesday heard Syed Farees Ahmed’s public interest petition seeking to establish district Wakf protection and coordination committees across the State to protect Wakf lands from land-grabbers.

It is the intention of the government that GO 3 (Minorities Welfare Establishment Department dated February 19th, 2021) and GO 4 (Minorities Welfare Establishment Department dated March 1, 2021) be issued to establish committees in all districts to protect Wakf lands.

Several Wakf protection and coordination committees have already been formed in 19 districts; the rest will be formed in due course, according to Telangana Wakf Board information. In the order, the division bench directed the government and Telangana Wakf Board to provide details of district Wakf protection and coordination committees across the state by September 16. The matter was adjourned until September 16.

The Meeting of the Waqf Board abruptly suspended

By providing the agenda just prior to the meeting, the power brokers bulldoze the members into taking hasty decisions. In addition to being unethical, it is also malafide. I, therefore, request that you provide the agenda notes as soon as possible and also in the upcoming meetings. During last week’s board meeting, some members expressed frustration over the agenda list is not provided to them well in advance. The Telangana State Waqf Board (TSWB) could not discuss all items on the agenda in detail because they were not provided with it well in advance.

Subsequently, the meeting was suspended. It was decided that the meeting would be reconvened on July 14 by the members and chairman Masiullah Khan. Mr. Khan announced that the second board meeting had been postponed to the 14th of this month.

During the board meeting, Syed Abul Fatah Bandagi Badshah Quadri mentioned that he had concerns about the way the meeting was conducted with Shahnawaz Qasim, who was previously elected as a member under the mutawalli category. In his message, Mr. Quadri raised objections to the way the agenda was distributed to members.
