PIL registered in Telangana High Court to ban Battleground Mobile

As per the latest reports, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was registered in Telangana High Court requesting that the famous addictive mobile game BattleGrounds Mobile India (BGMI) be banned.

Due to being banned by the Centre on September 2 in 2020, the game was released in India on July 2, 2021

This case is scheduled for trial in mid-March.

“The game is a threat to the privacy of Indian Citizens”

The petition was filed by Anil Stevenson Jangam, an advocate based in Hyderabad, who stated that the BGMI is “merely a different avatar of the banned PUBG mobile video game as it is highly probable to severely affect the mental health and even lives of youngsters.”

The petition goes on to say that the game is a threat to the privacy of the citizens of India and also poses national security issues.

“The banned application PUBG Mobile and BGMI are the exact same game with only cosmetic differences. The new application BattleGrounds Mobile India contains all of the dangers that its previously banned version posed to our children and adolescents. As a result, the new version should also be prohibited.”

The PIL states that the Chinese Company Tencent Holdings and Respondent No.3 (Krafton) have employed an indirect means of re-entering India, by an elaborate process of Front companies, and have aimed to hoodwink the Indian Authorities, which is harmful to the interest of India and its citizens.

Pubg mobile’s controversial track record

In 2019, an 11-year-old boy from Mumbai filed public interest litigation (PIL) against PUBG through his mother, claiming that the game promotes violence, aggression, and cyberbullying.

H.C. Arora, a Chandigarh advocate, requested a ban on PUBG in January 2020, claiming that the game is addictive and normalises violence, affecting their mental and physical health.

He even said that the game is like drugs due to its addictive nature.

Even prior to the nationwide ban in 2020, authorities in Gujarat had banned PUBG in several cities, and the Goa IT Minister had called for the game to be restricted.

Just before the current version of BGMI was released, Arunachal Pradesh MLA NinongEring wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting that the government prevent the company from releasing the new game as the game is an effort to avoid Indian laws and mislead the government and Indian citizens.
