On Monday, the power supply to most parts of three districts was stopped for 10 minutes in order to save a pigeon that was hanging precariously from a high tension electric line at KPHB in Hyderabad.
Following a request from the Animal Warriors Conservation Society, the unique rescue operation saw TS Transco officials turning off the power supply to most of Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and Hyderabad, so that the Society could rescue the pigeon without the rescuers suffering an electric shock.
According to Pradeep Nair, the founder of the Ameenpur-based Society, they had received a call from some animal lovers at 2 p.m. on Monday, and a team rushed to the scene. Given that it was a 133-KV power line, Nair said it would put the rescuers at risk.
As stated by an AWCS Santoshi member, they then contacted Transco chairman and managing director D Prabhakar Rao’s office. Following discussions and consultations among top officials, the power supply was turned off in most parts of the three regions for 10 minutes.
The AWCS hired a boom lift for Rs.6,000 per hour and rescued the bird, which was immediately released back into its natural habitat since it was healthy. According to Santoshi, the pigeon’s leg became entangled in a discarded thread.

When the pigeon attempted to fly away while perched on the power line, the thread became entangled in the wire. Though the actual rescue took 10 minutes, the entire process took nearly six hours, she said, pointing out that resources such as the boom lift had to be mobilized.
Things moved faster after they got through to Transco’s top brass, and the actual rescue operation was completed.
The operation also included AWCS members Sanjeev Dasa, Sanjeev Verma, Romina, Ganesh, and Niranjan.
