In a major operation to tackle the menace of deadly Chinese kite string, known as ‘manjha,’ Punjab Police has launched a state-wide campaign against its illegal sale and use. Punjab Special Director General of Police (Special DGP) Law and Order, Arpit Shukla, announced on Wednesday that the police have registered 90 FIRs and confiscated 80,879 bundles of Chinese dor in the last 20 days.
The campaign, spearheaded by Special DGP Shukla, aims to eradicate the use of these hazardous kite strings, which have been responsible for numerous injuries and fatalities due to their sharp, plastic-coated threads. During visits to market areas in Jalandhar and Ludhiana, Shukla, accompanied by Commissioners of Police Swapan Sharma and Kuldeep Singh Chahal, engaged with kite sellers, urging them to stop selling the banned strings. He also encouraged shopkeepers to report illegal sales, warning of strict legal action against violators.
Shukla emphasized the police department’s commitment to ensuring public safety and taking swift action against those trading in the dangerous kite string. The recovered bundles and the registered FIRs reflect the seriousness of the campaign, with raids conducted across the state targeting key sellers.
In addition to the crackdown on manjha, the Special DGP supervised security arrangements in Jalandhar and Ludhiana ahead of Republic Day celebrations. He directed intensified patrolling, increased police presence at public venues, and the installation of additional checkpoints across both cities. Strategic raids were conducted at critical locations to ensure public safety during the celebrations.
Highlighting the importance of vigilance, Shukla instructed police personnel to conduct thorough inspections of vehicles at checkpoints, ensuring that maximum security protocols are enforced. Public spaces such as malls, markets, and other crowded areas will be under heightened surveillance as part of the ongoing special operations.
The campaign against Chinese manjha has been welcomed as a much-needed initiative to prevent injuries and fatalities caused by the sharp strings. With police working closely with local communities, the effort aims to eradicate the use of these deadly materials and ensure a safer environment for the people of Punjab.
