The recent knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan and the subsequent arrest of Bangladeshi national Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Amin Fakir have sparked widespread controversy, with questions being raised about the incident and its aftermath. Discrepancies in the investigation, including the identity of the accused and Saif’s rapid recovery, have become the focal point of intense debate.
Shariful’s father, Mohammed Ruhul Amin Fakir, has publicly challenged the Mumbai police’s claims, stating that the CCTV footage used to arrest his son does not match Shariful’s appearance. “The person in the CCTV footage is not my son,” Mohammed Fakir asserted in a televised interview, emphasizing that his son has never kept long hair, unlike the person depicted in the footage. The CCTV image, widely circulated on social media and mainstream news outlets, purportedly shows an intruder climbing down the stairs of Saif’s apartment building, Satguru Sharan, in Bandra (W).
Shariful’s lawyer, Sandeep D. Sherkhane, also contested the police’s narrative, arguing that his client has lived in Mumbai with his family for the past seven years, contrary to police claims that he is a recent Bangladeshi immigrant. Sherkhane called the arrest a scapegoating attempt, alleging that the involvement of a Bollywood celebrity has complicated the case.

The knife attack occurred in the early hours of January 16, during what police described as a failed burglary attempt. Saif Ali Khan sustained six stab wounds, including a severe injury to his spine, while grappling with the intruder in his 12th-floor apartment. Following the attack, Saif underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital to remove a 2.5-inch knife fragment lodged in his spine and to repair a spinal fluid leak. Despite the severity of the injuries, Saif was discharged from the hospital within four days, raising eyebrows about the speed of his recovery.
The controversy took a political turn when Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole demanded clarity from the Mumbai police. “The media claims that the person in the CCTV footage and the arrested individual are not the same. The Mumbai police must clarify and present the truth to the public,” Patole said.
Leaders from the ruling MahaYuti coalition also expressed skepticism. Sanjay Nirupam, deputy leader of the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde, questioned the rapidity of Saif’s recovery. “How can someone who underwent a six-hour surgery walk out of the hospital in just four days? The public deserves transparency about the extent of the actor’s injuries,” Nirupam stated. Similarly, BJP Minister Nitesh Rane remarked, “When I saw Saif Ali Khan coming out of the hospital, I doubted whether he was actually stabbed six days ago or if he was acting. He appeared to be in perfect health.”
The incident has raised concerns about Mumbai’s law and order situation. Nirupam highlighted the public perception that the city’s safety has deteriorated, saying, “This case has created an atmosphere of fear, questioning the efficacy of the Home Ministry and the Maharashtra government.”
As the investigation unfolds, the spotlight remains on the Mumbai police to address the discrepancies surrounding Shariful’s arrest and provide transparency about the incident. Meanwhile, questions about Saif Ali Khan’s recovery and the credibility of the evidence continue to fuel public and political debate.
