In a symbolic and spiritually significant ceremony, the annual replacement of the Holy Kaaba’s kiswa was completed at the Grand Mosque in Makkah to mark the first day of Muharram, the start of the Islamic New Year.
The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques, through the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa, oversaw the intricate process. The new kiswa, made of black silk and gold-plated embroidery, was carefully draped over the Kaaba by a team of skilled Saudi professionals.
The freshly installed kiswa includes the gold-embroidered hizam (belt), decorative elements like the samadiah, and ornamental pieces surrounding the mizab (rainwater spout). The lantern-shaped decorations and corner adornments further enhanced the Kaaba’s revered appearance.
The kiswa, standing over 14 meters tall, is embellished with Quranic verses woven in pure gold and silver threads, using the Thuluth script. This intricate work reflects a blend of traditional Islamic artistry and modern technical precision.
The ceremony also spotlighted the active involvement of Saudi youth, who played a central role in the production, design, supervision, and execution of the kiswa replacement. Their contribution underlines the Kingdom’s focus on nurturing local expertise and integrating technological advancements while preserving religious heritage.
This annual event continues a historical tradition initiated by King Abdulaziz and strengthened under the leadership of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as part of the Kingdom’s vision to enhance services to pilgrims and visitors.
The changing of the Kaaba’s kiswa is more than a ritual—it stands as a powerful symbol of faith, continuity, and the Kingdom’s enduring commitment to the Two Holy Mosques, leaving a lasting imprint on the hearts of Muslims worldwide.
