Republic Day Rehearsals Trigger Massive Traffic Jams and Metro Delays in Delhi

Massive traffic congestion gripped central Delhi on Tuesday as Republic Day parade rehearsals caused significant disruptions across key routes, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. The chaos extended to metro stations, where heightened security checks led to long queues, frustrating daily travelers ahead of the Republic Day celebrations.

Routes leading to Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg near the ITO, arterial roads of the Ring Road between Ashram and IP Estate flyover, and major roads such as Man Singh Road, Rafi Marg, Janpath Road, Shahjahan Road, Akbar Road, and Ashoka Road were severely impacted. Kartavya Path and surrounding areas experienced heavy gridlocks, forcing many to endure hours-long delays.

Frustrated commuters took to social media to voice their grievances. One traveler shared videos of a traffic jam in Mundka, prompting the Delhi Traffic Police to announce that their control room had been informed and measures were being taken. Another user posted on X, “Don’t feel like going out for work. The traffic in Delhi is horrible.” Many blamed traffic personnel for failing to regulate traffic effectively and criticized the lack of timely information on diversions.

A commuter shared a picture of an online map showing all roads leading to central Delhi jam-packed. “People had to wait more than an hour to reach their destination,” they wrote. Another commuter posted a photo of heavy congestion near Kartavya Path and remarked, “Is it too much to ask Delhi Traffic Police to manage traffic? The entire central Delhi is choked.”

South Delhi also witnessed significant snarls, with one commuter reporting a two-hour delay on MB Road. A daily office-goer shared, “Usually I start in the early morning to reach my office on time. But today, I got stuck in traffic for more than two hours and had to inform my seniors about the delay.” Increased security measures, including vehicle inspections at every checkpoint, further added to the congestion.

Despite an advisory issued by the Delhi Traffic Police on January 15, notifying the public about road closures in central Delhi, the snarls persisted. The advisory detailed special traffic arrangements for January 17, 18, 20, and 21 to facilitate the Republic Day parade rehearsals on Kartavya Path. However, commuters felt the measures were insufficient to manage the surge in traffic.

Metro travelers, seeking to avoid road congestion, faced their own challenges. Long queues at metro stations caused delays, with many expressing their frustration online. One user posted a video on X, pleading with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to improve the situation: “Delhi metro please we can’t afford it in that peak time. We all know that 26th January is near, but we can’t afford such delays.”

The traffic disruptions, combined with enhanced security protocols, underscore the logistical challenges faced during the lead-up to Republic Day. While authorities emphasized that the arrangements aim to ensure smooth parade rehearsals, commuters continue to grapple with the resulting inconvenience.
