Rising Concern Over Women’s Safety in Metro Trains: Rachakonda SHE Teams Step Up Vigilance

Women’s safety in public transport has once again come under the spotlight after Rachakonda Police Commissionerate’s SHE Teams caught 10 men illegally travelling in the women’s compartment of metro trains during a recent decoy operation. These men were promptly fined by Metro Rail authorities, highlighting a growing concern about violations in designated safe spaces for women.

Rachakonda Police Commissioner G. Sudheer Babu issued a strong message, warning that strict action would be taken against anyone found harassing women. He encouraged women to come forward and report such incidents without fear, assuring that the police would offer full support.

The SHE Teams have been actively carrying out undercover operations in plain clothes at high-traffic public areas such as metro and railway stations, bus stands, schools, colleges, vegetable markets, and other busy spots. Their mission: to catch miscreants who follow or harass women and girls in public spaces.

Commissioner Sudheer Babu praised the efforts of the SHE Teams, stating that offenders are not only caught but also presented in court and made to undergo counselling in the presence of their parents. This approach not only enforces the law but also aims to reform the mindset of offenders.

In a major push for women’s safety, the Women Safety Wing of Rachakonda, in collaboration with SHE Teams, held a counselling session on Tuesday at the Rachakonda Camp Office. The session addressed the issue of eve-teasing and harassment in public spaces.

According to officials, a total of 240 individuals — including 160 adults and 80 minors — were apprehended in the past month alone for harassing women across the Rachakonda Commissionerate limits. This is a clear indication that while public awareness may be growing, inappropriate behavior in public spaces remains a persistent issue.

The recent incident inside metro trains raises serious concerns about the enforcement of designated women’s spaces and the general safety of female commuters. Incidents like these reinforce the need for continued vigilance, awareness, and stricter implementation of safety rules.

However, the proactive and determined efforts of the SHE Teams are commendable. Their constant presence and commitment to women’s safety provide a sense of security and empowerment to women across the city. Their work not only helps in catching offenders but also sends a strong message that harassment in any form will not be tolerated.

As Hyderabad continues to expand its metro network and attract more commuters, it becomes even more critical to ensure these public spaces remain safe and respectful for all — especially for women.
