Rising Fatalities at Ranganayaka Sagar and Konda Pochamma Sagar Demand Urgent Action

The Ranganayaka Sagar and Konda Pochamma Sagar reservoirs, integral components of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, have become increasingly hazardous, with over 50 fatalities reported in the last four years. The alarming situation underscores the urgent need for enhanced security and preventive measures around these popular yet perilous sites.

A significant number of deaths have resulted from tourists, often unfamiliar with swimming, venturing into the waters and drowning. Additionally, these reservoirs have unfortunately become sites for suicides. The easy accessibility of these reservoirs from Hyderabad, combined with their scenic allure, has made them increasingly popular tourist destinations. However, the lack of stringent safety protocols has turned them into zones of repeated tragedy.

Despite the installation of barriers and main gates to restrict water access, tourists have persistently bypassed these measures. On Sunday, five youths from Hyderabad tragically drowned in Konda Pochamma Sagar, highlighting the risks posed by tourists using unauthorized routes to access the water. At Ranganayaka Sagar, visitors have been entering the reservoir from hillocks behind the site, exacerbating the dangers.

The situation has drawn attention to the need for stronger preventive measures. Authorities are being urged to:

  • Install CCTV cameras for continuous monitoring.
  • Deploy security personnel to enforce access restrictions.
  • Station expert swimmers near the reservoirs to provide immediate assistance in case of emergencies.

Recent incidents have added to the growing concerns. A private teacher from Siddipet, identified as Raju, tragically drowned in Ranganayaka Sagar. The body of 22-year-old Irugadindla Aswini was also found floating in the same reservoir. In another heartbreaking case, 51-year-old Mariganti Satyanarayanacharyulu ended his life by jumping into Ranganayaka Sagar.

With the number of visitors steadily rising, authorities are under increasing pressure to implement robust safety measures. Enhanced vigilance and proactive interventions could prevent further loss of life and ensure public safety at these reservoirs.

The tragic deaths serve as a stark reminder of the need for a collective effort to balance the recreational appeal of these sites with the imperative of ensuring safety. Swift and decisive action is critical to safeguarding lives and transforming these reservoirs into safe, family-friendly destinations.
