Rising Tomato Prices in Hyderabad and India

Tomato prices in Hyderabad are on the rise, with pricing already hitting over Rs 200 per kilogram and anticipated to grow further. Prices have risen due to significant rains in Telangana and other Indian states, which has disrupted supply and impacted important producing regions.

Wholesalers expect that tomato prices will rise to Rs 300 per kilogram in the coming days. Other Indian cities, like New Delhi, are also experiencing a jump in tomato costs, with pricing hovering around Rs 250 per kilogram.

Due to landslides and heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh, transportation of vegetables, particularly tomatoes, has become difficult. Longer exportation times have ensued, making it difficult for manufacturers to maintain a consistent supply in the markets. According to Kaushik, a member of the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), wholesale prices have already increased to Rs 220 per kilogram from Rs 160 per kilogram, which may eventually lead to an increase in retail prices as well.

To demonstrate the gravity of the issue, Mother Dairy, a well-known dairy and vegetable retailer, has begun selling tomatoes at an eye-watering Rs 259 per kilogram through its Safal retail outlets.

As long as supply chain issues persist, tomato and other vegetable costs are expected to remain high until the situation stabilizes and transportation becomes more manageable. This price increase is putting a tremendous financial strain on families and is raising alarm in households across the country.
