In a shocking disclosure that raises serious questions about accountability in law enforcement, a Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed that police vehicles registered under the Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) have accumulated unpaid traffic fines amounting to ₹68,67,885.
The information was obtained by Lokendra Singh, a traffic volunteer known for his civic engagement and advocacy for road safety. According to the RTI response, a staggering 17,391 challans are currently pending against police vehicles, even though the State has been offering discounts on traffic penalties to encourage timely payments.
“This sets a bad example for the public,” Singh said, expressing concern over the contradiction between enforcement and compliance. “I respect the traffic police and believe deeply in transparency and accountability in law enforcement. But when the authorities themselves don’t follow the rules they enforce, it defeats the purpose of public service.”

The RTI further revealed that the majority of the traffic violations are being captured at the 226 signal-operated junctions under surveillance across Telangana. These include offenses such as signal-jumping, over-speeding, and unauthorized lane changes.
Singh cited Section 199 of the Motor Vehicles Act, emphasizing that violations committed without the knowledge of the vehicle owner must be addressed by identifying and penalizing the actual driver. He urged the Telangana DGP and respective Commissionerates to take immediate steps to clear the fines and implement stricter measures to prevent future violations.
He also appealed to the DGP to lead by example. “I sincerely hope that in the next RTI, the total pending fine comes down to NIL,” Singh added, calling for a directive to hold responsible drivers accountable and restore public confidence in the system.
As the revelations continue to stir public discourse, citizens and civic activists alike are awaiting an official response from the police department.
