Samajwadi Party’s MP from Sambhal, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, passed away on Tuesday during treatment at a private hospital in Moradabad following prolonged illness, the party confirmed.
Barq, aged 93, was admitted to a private hospital in Moradabad after his condition deteriorated. He was born on July 11, 1930, in Sambhal. A four-time MLA, he was elected MP from Sambhal in 2019.
Having served as MP from Moradabad thrice and representing Sambhal twice in Parliament, Barq was a senior leader of the SP. His grandson, Zia-ur-Rehman Barq, is the SP MLA from Kundarki seat in Moradabad.

Condolences poured in from SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and the party as a whole. Barq’s remarks on Vande Mataram being “anti-Islam” and his comparison of Taliban’s actions in Afghanistan to India’s freedom struggle had stirred controversy in the past.
