In a dramatic turn of events, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday launched a bulldozer action against Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq, following allegations of electricity theft. The administration demolished an illegal structure outside the MP’s residence in Deepa Sarai as part of its crackdown.
The electricity department had earlier imposed a fine of ₹1.91 crore on Barq on charges of electricity theft, following an inspection on Thursday. Subsequently, on Friday, a team arrived at his house with police protection to replace old electricity meters with new smart meters. The two sealed old meters have been sent to a laboratory for further testing.
Superintending Engineer Vinod Kumar Gupta stated that the inspection revealed unauthorized electricity usage and evidence of bypassing the meter to steal electricity. Following the findings, electricity supply to the MP’s residence was disconnected.

Adding to the controversy, an FIR was lodged against the MP’s father, Maulana Mamlukur Rahman Bark, for allegedly threatening two junior engineers of the electricity department during the inspection. SP Krishna Kumar Vishnoi confirmed that a case has been registered against Bark at Nakhasa police station.
This incident is not the first controversy involving the Sambhal MP. Earlier, Barq faced charges of inciting violence in Sambhal on November 24. The recent developments have added to the legal troubles for the Samajwadi Party leader and his family.
The Uttar Pradesh government’s actions, including the demolition and hefty fine, underline its ongoing campaign against illegal activities and corruption in the state.
