Saudi Arabia Launches World’s First Self-Driving Aerial Taxi for Hajj Pilgrims

In a groundbreaking move to modernize and enhance transport during the Hajj pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia has inaugurated the world’s first self-driving aerial taxi service. This pioneering initiative, reported by the state news agency SPA, aims to facilitate swift and efficient transportation across holy sites, enable rapid medical emergency responses, and ensure timely delivery of goods and supplies.

The electric flying taxi, which has been licensed by the civil aviation authority, marks a significant leap in the application of advanced transport technologies. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistic Services, hailed the service as a transformative step in adopting environment-friendly transport models that leverage artificial intelligence.

On Wednesday, Minister Al-Jasser witnessed the vertical takeoff of the autonomous vehicle at a launch event attended by Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, President of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA); Rumaih Al-Rumaih, Deputy Minister of Transport and Logistics Services; and numerous representatives from related entities.

“The inauguration of the air taxi aligns with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy’s objectives to modernize our transport sector,” said Al-Jasser. “We aim to enhance smart mobility and develop legislation, laws, and systems that enable the employment of modern technologies. Providing experimental environments is crucial to facilitate the expansion of future transport technologies.”

The aerial taxi is a key component of the advanced air mobility roadmap, highlighted by GACA’s President Al-Duailej. This roadmap seeks to minimize passenger travel time within congested areas, particularly during emergencies, and improve the transportation of goods and medical supplies. Additionally, the aerial taxi will support surveillance and inspection tasks, ensuring swift and effective operations.

This innovative transport service is one of 32 modern technologies introduced to serve pilgrims during this year’s Hajj. The integration of these advanced technologies underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to enhancing the pilgrimage experience through smart, sustainable, and efficient solutions.

By embracing cutting-edge transport innovations such as the self-driving aerial taxi, electric cars, and hydrogen trains, Saudi Arabia is setting a global precedent in future transport technologies. This strategic move not only elevates the nation’s transport infrastructure but also reinforces its dedication to environmental sustainability and technological advancement.

As the Hajj season progresses, the newly launched aerial taxi service is expected to significantly improve the logistical aspects of the pilgrimage, ensuring that pilgrims can focus on their spiritual journey with greater ease and convenience.
