At the Union for the Mediterranean’s ninth Regional Forum in Barcelona, Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Elkhereiji emphasized the urgent need for decisive international efforts to address escalating violence in Gaza and Lebanon.
Speaking on Monday, Elkhereiji urged global leaders to support international law and push for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to prevent further escalation and alleviate deepening humanitarian crises.
Elkhereiji condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon, citing forced displacement, civilian casualties, and widespread destruction as violations of international humanitarian law. He reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s opposition to illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank and any measures impacting Jerusalem’s historical status. Verbal condemnations alone, he stated, are insufficient; he called for practical measures to protect civilians and uphold peace.
The Kingdom is set to host the first high-level meeting of the Global Coalition for the Two-State Solution on October 30 in Riyadh, where Elkhereiji emphasized Saudi Arabia’s commitment to achieving a lasting peace. He stated that securing an independent Palestinian state is essential for regional stability and urged collective action to make a two-state solution a reality.
