Saudi Green Initiative Launches Seed Scattering Campaign to Restore Vegetation Cover in Madinah Region

Madinah, Saudi Arabia – Representatives from various government entities, associations, and local communities gathered in the Madinah region to participate in a large-scale seed scattering campaign aimed at reviving vegetation cover in the King Abdulaziz Protected Pasture in Al Hanakiyah governorate. The event, reported by the Saudi Press Agency, marked a significant step in the ongoing efforts of the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) to combat desertification and promote environmental sustainability across the Kingdom.

Launched in March 2021 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Green Initiative is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a national framework to diversify the country’s economy, empower its citizens, and foster a vibrant environment for local and international investors. SGI’s goals include protecting 30 percent of the Kingdom’s land and sea by 2030, a target that aligns with the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) as the primary body responsible for implementing sustainable land management practices, afforestation, and forest protection.

The recent seed scattering campaign, which took place over the weekend, was led by the NCVC in collaboration with officials from the Madinah region. Participants scattered seeds of various pasture plants and wild trees, selected specifically for their resilience to the local climate and their role in enhancing biodiversity. The species planted include pasture plants such as Rimth saltbush, Arfaj, Lemongrass, and Fourwing saltbush, alongside wild trees like Acacia tortilis, Acacia seyal, and Acacia salam. These species were chosen for their adaptability and potential to restore the region’s natural vegetation cover.

The Saudi Green Initiative is a multi-pronged effort aimed at reviving vegetation, raising public awareness on the importance of afforestation, and creating green spaces that act as natural defenses against soil erosion and desertification. The initiative also prioritizes reducing environmental pollution and enhancing the quality of life for citizens. Through activities like these, the SGI aspires to not only rehabilitate degraded lands but also to create a healthy, pristine environment that sustains local wildlife, strengthens ecosystems, and benefits surrounding communities.

The Saudi Green Initiative is part of the broader Saudi Vision 2030, which positions environmental stewardship as a pillar of sustainable growth. By 2030, SGI aims to rehabilitate vast tracts of desert land across the Kingdom and increase green cover by protecting and regenerating natural habitats, thereby ensuring a sustainable future for the nation’s flora and fauna.

SGI’s commitments extend beyond afforestation, focusing on sustainable management of national parks, grazing lands, and ecological preserves, which is in line with Saudi Arabia’s goal to be a global leader in combating climate change and fostering environmental resilience.
