The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance has successfully completed significant maintenance and refurbishment work on more than 6,000 mosques across the Kingdom in the first half of 2024, as part of its ongoing commitment to enhancing the worship experience for citizens and pilgrims.
According to a report from the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the ministry undertook comprehensive projects aimed at the maintenance, cleaning, restoration, and furnishing of 6,153 mosques, with a total investment of nearly SR500 million ($133 million). These efforts reflect the ministry’s dedication to maintaining the spiritual and physical sanctity of mosques, which are central to the religious life of the Kingdom.
The bulk of the ministry’s work focused on maintaining over 5,300 mosques, with an expenditure of SR362 million ($96 million). These maintenance efforts included structural repairs, cleaning, and upgrades to essential facilities, ensuring that worshippers have access to safe and clean environments for prayer and reflection.
In addition to maintenance, the ministry modernized air conditioning systems at key pilgrimage sites, including the mosques of Miqat Al-Juhfah, Al-Taneem, and Al-Mash’ar Al-Haram. This modernization project, costing SR15 million ($3.9 million), was crucial for enhancing the comfort of pilgrims, particularly during the intense heat of the pilgrimage seasons.
The ministry also reported the complete restoration of three mosques and the construction of an administrative building, with these projects amounting to SR13.5 million ($3.5 million). These restorations are part of broader efforts to preserve and modernize religious sites across the Kingdom.
A significant innovation introduced by the ministry this year was the implementation of glass partition projects at 683 mosques. This initiative, aimed at improving energy efficiency, has resulted in a remarkable 60 percent reduction in electricity consumption, contributing to the Kingdom’s broader sustainability goals.
Moreover, the ministry furnished 66 mosques, covering a total area of 56,761 square meters, at a cost of SR6.8 million ($1.8 million). This project included the provision of new carpets, lighting, and other essential furnishings to enhance the worshippers’ experience.
Beyond mosques, the ministry allocated over SR30 million ($7.9 million) for the maintenance of four affiliated administrative buildings, further ensuring that the infrastructure supporting the Kingdom’s religious activities is well-maintained and efficient.
These extensive efforts underscore the Ministry of Islamic Affairs’ ongoing commitment to ensuring that mosques throughout Saudi Arabia are clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. The ministry’s work not only supports the spiritual needs of millions of worshippers but also aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals, which include improving the quality of life for all residents and visitors to Saudi Arabia.
As the year progresses, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs is expected to continue its work in maintaining and upgrading religious sites across the Kingdom, ensuring that they remain places of peace, reflection, and community for all who visit.
