Schools Reopen in Jammu and Kashmir at ‘Parents Risk’

Schools in Jammu and Kashmir reopened on Monday for students in Classes 9 to 12, yet the whole responsibility regarding the wellbeing of the students will be on the parents.

In a strange move, the Directorate of School Education has created an undertaking to be furnished by the parents, which puts the whole responsibility regarding the wellbeing of kids on the parents.

“I shall be personally responsible, if there is any untoward incident, like coronavirus infection, with my ward. I shall not blame anybody in the school for such an incident,” declares the undertaking. It implies that any extreme circumstance emerging for the kids in the school would be the sole responsibility of the parents and not that of the government that is basically forcing this undertaking down the throats of the parents, essentially instructing them to court the grave dangers for their children so that they can go to school for classes 9 to 12.

The undertaking furthermore states that the parents will give face covers, sanitizers and additionally guarantee that the kids don’t wear any belts, wristwatches, rings, and so on., as those could become reasons for the spread of the COVID-19 infection.

Educational organizations were shut in Kashmir on August 5, 2019, following Article 370 was abrogated and the state decreased into two union territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Educational organizations were planned to resume in March this year, yet had to be closed due to the lockdown to control the spread of COVID-19 disease.

The decision to resume the schools when the number of COVID-19 positive cases is on the ascent in Jammu and Kashmir has evoked criticism from numerous quarters.
