In a significant environmental effort, the South Central Railway (SCR) has successfully translocated a 60-year-old Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) from the premises of Rail Nilayam in Secunderabad. The tree, which stood at around 40 feet tall and had a circumference of 3½ meters, was carefully relocated to make way for essential construction activities while ensuring its preservation.
This initiative reflects SCR’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. The translocation process, carried out under meticulous planning and expert supervision, has been hailed as an exemplary model of balancing development with ecological responsibility.
The Peepal tree, a symbol of spirituality and environmental importance, had to be moved to facilitate the construction work on the Rail Nilayam premises. To ensure the tree’s survival, SCR consulted with nature conservation experts and executed a well-thought-out plan that aimed to minimize the disturbance to the roots and overall health of the tree.

A renowned nature lover and expert in tree translocation, A. Chandramouli from Kurnool, was called upon to lead the operation. Chandramouli, who has previously handled similar successful projects, including the rejuvenation of the historic Pillamarri banyan tree in Mahbubnagar, used specialized techniques and modern equipment to facilitate the translocation process.
The procedure began with the careful cutting of the tree’s branches, followed by a detailed process of treating the roots. The experts applied a pre-treatment of 50 kilograms of neem cake mixed with oil and then added 180 kilograms of natural manure to the new location. Additionally, 2 liters of humic acid diluted in 200 liters of water was sprinkled to help stimulate the tree’s root system.
“We took special care to ensure that the translocation caused minimal damage to the tree’s roots,” said Chandramouli. “The process involved thorough preparation, and we used advanced methods to safeguard the tree’s health. We anticipate that new shoots will begin to emerge in the next three to six months.”
This translocation effort is not the first of its kind for SCR. In 2021, SCR had successfully translocated three trees from the Railway Coaching Depot in Kacheguda, with the help of expert tree-plantation specialists. The railway’s ongoing focus on sustainable practices has earned it recognition for integrating ecological conservation with urban infrastructure development.
Arun Kumar Jain, the General Manager of South Central Railway, praised the efforts of the engineering team for their dedication to preserving the environment during construction work. “This initiative aligns with SCR’s broader efforts to promote sustainable development,” he said. “We are committed to preserving green spaces while pursuing our infrastructural goals. This successful translocation highlights how we can continue development without compromising on environmental responsibility.”
The Peepal tree’s successful translocation is part of SCR’s continued efforts to create a balance between growth and sustainability. As urbanization expands, such initiatives have become increasingly important to ensure the preservation of natural resources and to maintain ecological health. The tree, once fully settled into its new environment, will continue to provide numerous environmental benefits, including air purification and fostering biodiversity.
South Central Railway’s proactive approach to tree conservation and environmental responsibility showcases a promising example of how infrastructure development and ecological preservation can go hand in hand. As the Peepal tree begins its new life in Secunderabad, the railway has set an inspiring precedent for other organizations to follow in their efforts to protect and nurture the environment while advancing progress.
