During the festive season, not only will there be a large crowd at railway stations and even on trains, but there will also be many ticket touts looking for a quick buck. South Central Railway (SCR) officials have warned passengers to be cautious, to avoid falling into their trap, and to avoid purchasing tickets from such unscrupulous individuals or traveling in trains without a ticket.
They advised that even if in doubt, do not purchase your ticket from a tout. “A special drive to catch the touts and regulate ticketless travel is being undertaken regularly to keep a check on such illegal activity and save passengers,” said a senior SCR official.
According to the latest reports, the SCR had apprehended many ticket touts and seized live and used tickets worth several thousands of rupees during an intensified special drive against touts and unauthorized agents at all reservation offices and travel agencies in major stations.
It is worth mentioning that the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) have been conducting drives to protect passengers from ticket black-marketing and to control revenue loss to the Indian Railways as touts conduct business without a valid license. If not stopped, this would have a negative impact on the exchequer. Furthermore, passengers are also advised to purchase tickets only from reservation counters and authorized travel agents.
If anyone notices unauthorized persons selling tickets, they are told to report it to railway authorities immediately. A top railway official had also warned passengers not to accept food or drinks from strangers because there was a high risk of them being drugged and robbed. Passengers have frequently reported such incidents. He also warned them that it is a punishable offense to pull chains to stop trains unnecessarily.
