Seven-Year Jail Term Proposed for Forged Passport Usage

In a significant move aimed at strengthening immigration regulations, the Union Home Ministry has proposed a new immigration bill that includes stringent penalties for individuals using forged passports or visas to enter, stay, or exit India. If passed by Parliament, individuals found guilty could face imprisonment for up to seven years and fines reaching Rs 10 lakh.

The proposed legislation, introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 3, outlines several key provisions designed to enhance tracking and oversight of foreign nationals in India. One of the notable features of the bill is the mandatory reporting requirement for hotels, universities, educational institutions, hospitals, and nursing homes concerning foreign guests. This measure aims to facilitate monitoring of overstaying foreigners within the country.

Additionally, the bill stipulates that all international airlines and ships must submit passenger and crew manifests at Indian ports. They will also be required to provide advance information about their passengers and crew before arrival.

Under the new regulations, anyone knowingly using or supplying a forged or fraudulently obtained passport or other travel documents to enter or stay in India could face a minimum imprisonment term of two years, which may extend to seven years. Moreover, offenders will also be subject to fines not less than Rs 50,000, which could rise to Rs 10 lakh depending on the severity of the offense.

The bill also addresses concerns regarding foreign nationals entering India without valid travel documents, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintaining national security and immigration integrity.

As the proposed legislation awaits parliamentary approval, it marks a significant step towards tightening immigration controls and ensuring accountability for foreign visitors in India.
