Shah Rukh Khan Chosen as First Pick for Dawood Ibrahim Role in ‘Company: RGV

Ram Gopal Varma’s 2002 film ‘Company’ remains a timeless gangster drama, drawing inspiration from Mumbai’s infamous underworld and led by Don Dawood Ibrahim’s D-Company. Despite its enduring popularity, Varma revealed surprising insights into his initial casting choices for pivotal roles.

In a recent YouTube video, Varma disclosed that Shah Rukh Khan was his first choice to portray Dawood Ibrahim in ‘Company’. He recounted meeting Khan, who expressed excitement about the role. However, Varma ultimately opted against casting Khan, citing concerns about his energetic persona.

“I felt that he’s very hyper; his energy, the way he is… That’s what people like. I thought, to make him very subtle – not moving at all and very silent — I thought it would look very odd on screen,” explained Varma. Instead, Ajay Devgn’s subdued demeanor fit the role of Malik, which he eventually portrayed.

Varma also considered Abhishek Bachchan for the role of Chota Rajan but couldn’t cast him due to the actor’s busy schedule with other projects at the time. Additionally, he initially approached Kamal Haasan for the role of the Mumbai police commissioner, eventually played by Mohanlal.

‘Company’ continues to be celebrated for its gritty portrayal of Mumbai’s underworld, with Varma’s casting decisions contributing to its lasting impact on Indian cinema.
