Women who wish to communicate with the Cyberabad She Teams are finding the immensely popular WhatsApp app extremely useful.
In the period between March and May 2015, the Cyberabad She Teams received 166 complaints, 128 of which were sent via WhatsApp. Among the remaining 38 complaints, police received 18 directly, 6 through Hawk-Eye, 11 through the Women Safety Wing, two via e-mail, and 1 through Twitter, according to police.
As a result of our efforts, we try to ensure that no victim is stigmatized and reluctant to report the perpetrator. With the advent of WhatsApp, many more ways to lodge a complaint have made the process much easier for the already tense and scared victims,” a senior official noted.
Of the complaints, 50 concerned phone harassment, 25 concerned blackmail, 16 concerned stalkings, 15 concerned cheating on a marriage contract, 13 concerned social media, 12 concerned threats, and ten concerned lewd remarks. Among the complaints, eight dealt with sending obscene content over WhatsApp, while two each dealt with misbehaving, workplace harassment, flashing, and love issues.
Cyberabad’s 11 She Teams responded to complaints by visiting the complainants in their place of contact. According to officials, 33 cases were booked, including 13 FIRs and 20 petty cases, based on the verification of facts in the complaints. One hundred thirty-two individuals were counselled, and sixty-two were warned to change their behaviour.
The teams conducted decoy operations during the same period, catching 44 people on the spot and booking petty cases in addition to stopping three child marriages.
The Cyberabad police have advised women facing harassment to contact the She Teams by sending a message to WhatsApp No. 9490617444, calling the divisional She Team or dialling 100, or sending an email to [email protected] or via Twitter (@sheteamcybd), Facebook (Women and ChildrenSafetyWing) and Instagram (womenandchildrensafetywingcybd).
