A farmer from the Valmiki Basti area of Bawal, Rewari, was left in shock after receiving an electricity bill of ₹78.21 lakh for his modest four-room house. The staggering amount has left the family in severe mental distress, as they claim even selling their home wouldn’t help them clear such an enormous bill.
The farmer, identified as Deepak, has accused the electricity department of negligence. He stated that the bill amount is grossly inflated and not reflective of his household’s actual electricity consumption.
This is not the first time Deepak has faced issues with incorrect billing. Last month, he received a bill of ₹60,000—an amount much higher than his usual monthly bill of ₹500–₹700. Fearing disconnection, Deepak took out a loan to pay the ₹60,000. However, just weeks later, the department sent him another bill, this time amounting to ₹78.21 lakh, leaving him and his family in despair.

Deepak, visibly distressed, shared his plight:
“Even if we sell our house, we cannot pay this amount. My family and I are already struggling to make ends meet. This negligence by the electricity department has pushed us to the brink of despair.”
The family has demanded an immediate investigation into the matter and is considering legal action if their grievances are not addressed.
When contacted, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of the electricity department, Ravinder Kumar, acknowledged the mistake.
“This bill was generated due to a technical error in the system. We are aware of the issue and will rectify it as soon as possible,” Kumar assured.
Deepak’s family has urged authorities to conduct a high-level investigation into the billing discrepancies. They have expressed hope that the issue will be resolved soon, sparing them further mental anguish.
This incident has sparked outrage among local residents, many of whom have questioned the efficiency of the electricity department. It also raises broader concerns about the impact of such errors on ordinary citizens and the need for stricter checks to prevent similar cases in the future.
As the electricity department works to resolve the matter, Deepak and his family remain hopeful that justice will prevail and their lives will return to normalcy.
