Single-use plastic Banned beginning today

From July 1, the Centre will prohibit the manufacture, use, possession, sale, distribution, or import of single-use plastics. Carry cloth, jute, or paper bag with you, and don’t expect plastic bags from shopkeepers, hotels, vegetable vendors, medical stores, or any other source.

All types of plastics less than 100 microns thick and difficult to recycle are prohibited, and anyone found producing and selling such plastics will have their license revoked.

The ban is in place due to the dangers that plastics pose to humans, animals, water bodies (including seas), the earth, and the environment. Dr. Srikanth Reddy, Assistant Medical Officer of Health (AMOH) of Khairathabad zone, told The media, “The GHMC will hold awareness campaigns in markets and public places, urging people not to use plastic items. Furthermore, a special campaign will be launched in which AMOHs will levy fines on vendors who use plastic bags.”

The CPCB and the State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) will monitor the single-use plastic ban and report to the Centre on a regular basis. According to reports, the CPCB has issued directives at the national, state, and local levels to refrain from supplying raw materials to industries that engage in prohibited activities.

The CPCB has also directed local governments to issue new commercial licenses with the condition that SUP items not be sold on their property. More importantly, existing commercial licenses will be revoked if the prohibited items are found to be sold.

According to a 2021 report, single-use plastics account for one-third of all plastic produced globally, with 98 percent made from fossil fuels.

In 2019, single-use plastic accounted for the majority of plastic discarded (130 million metric tonnes).
