In a tragic incident that has triggered widespread outrage, a 34-year-old woman, Rajeshwari, wife of Government Railway Police Force (GRPF) Sub-Inspector Banoth Rana Pratap, died by suicide late Sunday night in Hyderabad.
Rajeshwari, a resident of Subhash Chandrabose Nagar Colony in Kothagudem, consumed pesticide on June 25 at her house near Julurupadu after allegedly enduring prolonged mental and physical harassment from her husband and in-laws. Despite being rushed to hospitals in Kothagudem, Khammam, and later Hyderabad’s Yashoda Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries at 11:25 pm on Sunday.
Before her death, Rajeshwari reportedly gave a dying declaration, leading the Julurupadu police to register a case under non-bailable sections against her husband Rana Pratap, his mother Pushparani, father Chandram, and brother Mahesh.

According to her father, Keloth Somla, the family had given a dowry worth ₹44 lakh at the time of marriage, including ₹40 lakh in cash and 35 tolas of gold. However, Rajeshwari’s family alleges that she was continuously harassed for more dowry and subjected to domestic violence.
Rana Pratap’s controversial past has also resurfaced. He was previously suspended for allegedly misusing his service weapon while on duty in Khammam. His father, Chandram, also served in the police force before retirement.
The accused have been taken into custody. Rajeshwari’s body has been sent for post-mortem at a government hospital. The incident has reignited the debate over dowry-related harassment and the conduct of law enforcement personnel, with many calling for stringent action.
