Amateur stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts in Hyderabad have a unique opportunity to spot four of our solar system’s planets in the skies this January. Weather permitting and with adequate darkness, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars will be visible to the naked eye in the western and eastern skies over the next few days.
N Sree Raghunandan Kumar, founder president of the Planetary Society of India (PSI), has shared valuable tips for spotting these celestial objects without the need for telescopes. While there have been exaggerated reports about the visibility of 6 to 7 planets, Kumar assures that this rare opportunity to observe Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars together in the evening sky is not to be missed.
“On the western horizon before 8:30 pm, look for a bright, non-twinkling star-like object—that’s Venus. It will set around 8:30 pm, so you have a limited window to observe it. Right next to Venus, with keen observation, you can spot a dim, yellowish-white, non-twinkling object—that’s Saturn,” Kumar explained.

On the eastern horizon, spotting Jupiter is straightforward. It will appear as a bright, non-twinkling star-like object. Further along the horizon, you can also spot Mars, an orange-red celestial object that will stand out against the night sky.
As the night progresses, Jupiter will be visible directly overhead around 10 pm, while Mars will be positioned ahead around midnight. Before sunrise, Mars can be seen in the western sky.
Kumar advises that this is an ideal time for casual observers to catch a glimpse of these fascinating planets without rushing to buy expensive equipment. With clear skies and proper timing, this is an accessible opportunity for anyone interested in the wonders of the night sky.
For those eager to catch the celestial spectacle, the coming days offer a great chance to see these planets in their natural positions across Hyderabad’s sky.
