St Francis College withdraws rule after students protest

Hyderabad : Following a protest by hundreds of students of St Francis College at Begumpet on Monday for imposing restrictions to wear kurtis below knees, the college administration decided to withdraw its rule.

The irate students said the college management has been sending back the students who wore kurtis above their length for the last two days. Fumed over the restrictions, the students protested against the college management. Eyewitnesses said the students wearing Burqa were asked to pull it up with male watchman to show their kurtis length before entering the college.

The college was implementing the rule from August 1, with the students being threatened of suspension if they violated the rule. Videos had surfaced on Friday showing the college staff scanning the girls and only the ones who adhered to the rule being allowed onto the campus.

On Monday, when the students were staging a protest in front of the college shouting slogans against the rule and blocking the entrance to the college, the Punjagutta police intervened to bring the situation under control. Later, talks between student representatives and the college authorities resulted in the college management agreeing to withdraw the rule. (NSS)
