At the historic Qutb Shahi tombs, Telangana Industries and Information Technology Minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) inaugurated step-wells (baolis).
Jennifer Larson, the new US consul general, was briefed by KTR regarding the history of the Qutub Shahi tombs and the latest developments in Hyderabad. During an interview with the media, the minister said, “We will surely apply for the UNESCO world heritage tag in the future.”
The Aga Khan Trust for Culture, he continued, has done an excellent job of maintaining these heritage sites. In addition, KTR stressed the importance of preserving cities’ culture and heritage.
It was the Qutb Shahi dynasty (1518-1687) that once ruled from the Golconda fort and later founded Hyderabad in 1591, and its tombs are the royal necropolis of that dynasty. There are nearly 100 structures in the tombs complex, including tombs, gardens, pavilions, and mosques. Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and the Telangana Department of Heritage are currently restoring the site.
The work completed by the AKTC on the tombs is remarkable. The organization, which also restored Humayun’s tomb in Delhi (among many others), also saved Qutb Shahi tombs’ Badi Baoli (stepwell) from collapse half a decade ago after a portion of the stepwell fell due to heavy rains. The structure has been restored to its original state today.
KTR said that the Telangana government is eager to conserve and showcase the Qutb Shahi Tombs, which are among Hyderabad’s greatest historical legacies.
Restoration of kamaans, 11 more step-wells, and different heritage structures too was being taken up, the Minister said.
As part of the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), which supports a wide range of cultural preservation projects around the world, including historic buildings and archaeological sites, the stepwell renovation project at the Qutb Shahi Tombs Complex was funded.
