The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has stated its intention to run in the upcoming Telangana assembly elections on its own, without joining forces with any other political party. TDP National President N. Chandrababu Naidu clarified this during an informal meeting with reporters in New Delhi.
To contest the Telangana elections in 2018, the TDP formed an alliance with the Congress and the Left parties. The partnership, however, had minimal success, with the TDP obtaining only two seats. Both of these MLAs ultimately defected to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the ruling party.
Naidu’s recent pronouncement has put an end to speculation regarding possible coalitions for the next elections. The former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh indicated that his party will not form an alliance with the BJP in Telangana.
The TDP’s decision to run on its own shows a renewed focus on state politics and a desire to reassert its influence in Telangana’s political landscape. However, the party has yet to decide whether it would run candidates in all 119 assembly constituencies or just a few. To make this choice, a committee has been created.
In terms of potential Andhra Pradesh partnerships, Naidu stated that any agreement would be dependent on the party’s strategic needs. Naidu had earlier met with BJP officials to examine the prospect of resuming their political partnership.
Naidu’s TDP had previously split from the BJP in 2018, claiming the BJP’s failure to fulfill its pledge to award Andhra Pradesh special category status. In the 2019 elections, the TDP lost power in Andhra Pradesh to the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
Meanwhile, Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader and actor Pawan Kalyan has expressed interest in forming a coalition with both the TDP and the BJP to face the YSRCP in the next Andhra Pradesh elections. Political dynamics in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are changing dramatically as parties strategize and align themselves in preparation for the next elections.
