Hyderabad: Training by the teacher is much more effective for the students than mere preaching and advising. The process of learning is life-long. Prof. Khalid Mahmood, Former Head, Dept. of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, expressed these views today at MANUU while delivering the Teachers’ Day Lecture.
Dr. Mohammad Aslam Parvaiz, Vice-Chancellor, MANUU presided over the event.
The topic of the lecture was ‘Education, Purpose of Education, Teacher & Responsibilities of a Teacher’.
School of Education and Training, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) organized the lecture at DDE Auditorium, MANUU Campus in connection with Teachers’ Day celebrations.
Prof. Khalid Mahmood reminded the audience that in earlier days the whole community used to mentor the youth. He described it as collective upbringing. It is necessary that the teacher shall also do whatever he says. A teacher needs to be passionate to do justice with his profession. Craziness is required for any achievement. He described the students as the moon and stars of the planet. Paying rich tributes to the former president and revered teacher Dr. S. Radha Krishnan, Prof. Mahmood called him the priest of the temple of knowledge. A good teacher satisfies the urge for knowledge in the students.
Dr. Mohammed Aslam Parvaiz in his presidential address said that the University is established to promote freedom of thought and expression. A human being is nothing without knowledge, knowledge is identity. Students respect the teacher for their whole life when they learn something. If the teacher is not worthy in his subject then he cannot conquer the hearts of the students.
Prof. Shakeel Ahmad, Pro Vice-Chancellor quoted Jawahar Lal Nehru who had said ‘Dr. Radha Krishnan is indeed a great philosopher and intellectual but I respect him as a great teacher’. Dr. M.A. Sikandar, Registrar, MANUU recalled Dr. Radha Krishnan’s contribution as Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University. Universities are not merely meant to facilitate the employment of the students, they are supposed to make good human beings, he remarked.
Earlier, Prof. Fatima Begum, Dean, School of Education and Training spoke about the life and work of Dr. S. Radha Krishnan. Prof. H. Khatija Begum, Head welcomed the gathering. Dr. Mohd. Moshahid proposed the vote of thanks. Prof. Siddiqui Mohd. Mahmood conducted the proceedings.
