Telangana: AP attempts to mislead KWDT-II regarding Krishna water sharing ratio

Despite Telangana clearly stating that it has not changed its position on Krishna water and power sharing, among other issues, Andhra Pradesh attempted to persuade the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (KWDT-II) on Wednesday that Telangana had agreed to the 66:34 water sharing ratio before the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB).

KWDT-II chairman Justice Brijesh Kumar and members Justice Rammohan Reddy and Justice S Talapathra, who resumed the hearing on Wednesday in New Delhi, were given the impression during cross examination by Andhra Pradesh senior counsel G Umapathy that Telangana had agreed to the 66:34 water sharing ratio between AP and Telangana.

However, expert witness on operation protocol Chetan Pandit, representing Telangana, clarified that during the KRMB meeting, the Telangana Special Chief Secretary protested the 66:34 ratio and even wrote a letter to the Central Government in this regard.

During cross examination, the AP representative stated that his state was the lower riparian state in the Krishna Basin and that it should use all of the remaining water in the Basin. Chetan Pandit, on the other hand, clarified that neither state was upstream or downstream. He also stated that KWDT-I allowed the erstwhile combined state of Andhra Pradesh (not the residual AP) to use all of the remaining water because it was the worst sufferer.

However, when the situation between residual AP and Telangana was examined, the disadvantage was with Telangana, and it suffers more severely than AP, so Telangana was entitled to use the remaining water, he stated.

On Saturday, the irrigation officials of both the states attended a meeting on water management in reservoirs hosted by the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) here. The officials from both the states raised concerns about water management in the combined projects.
