Telangana: Five people die as water levels rise in Godavari river

Over the last week, torrential rains across Telangana and the rise in the Godavari river resulted in five deaths, including a minor.

The deceased were identified as Ganga, 47, and her 2-year-old grandson Kanhiya, who were washed away in Fazalnagar in Vemulwada.

As they crossed a culvert to reach Hyderabad, they were involved in an accident.

Locals were only able to save Satish, a relative of Ganga, and Rizwan, the driver, as the car fell into the water.

Another incident occurred in Jagtial when a tree fell on the car and killed 35-year-old V Ravi and 45-year-old B Rajam. They were traveling to the Kuntala waterfalls in Adilabad. Injuries were sustained by Nikhil, a co-passenger.

On September 10, U Manoj, a Hyderabad resident, drowned while taking a selfie in the Dindi project. In July this year, a number of villages were inundated by the rising water levels in the Godavari.

The Godavari river water breached the danger level in Bhadrachalm reaching 45.10 ft, causing the authorities to issue their first warning. Puvavada Ajay Kumar, the Telangana transport minister, said the administration has been put on high alert.

During the past two months, this was the fourth time the Godavari was swollen. Four days ago, people from the merged mandals returned to their villages after 60 days of temporary shelter in safer places.

As they were repairing flood-damaged buildings, huts, and tiled houses, they found themselves back at square one. To save their lives, they had requested that the government settle their R&R packages and construct R&R colonies on a war footing.

Kunavaram Mandal tahsildar Anasuya alerted officials about the worsening flood situation. As the first warning had already been sounded in Kunavaram, it was urged people to move to safer places.
