Warangal, one of Telangana’s historic cities, is set to embark on a transformative journey as the state government aims to replicate the success of Hyderabad’s urban development in the district. At the heart of this ambitious vision is the revival and modernization of Mamnoor Airport, a move that is expected to play a pivotal role in the district’s growth into a modern urban center.
Currently non-operational, Mamnoor Airport has long been underutilized. However, the Telangana government has earmarked ₹205 crore for the acquisition of 253 acres of land to expand and upgrade the airport’s infrastructure. The goal is to make Mamnoor a key transportation hub, not just for Warangal but for the entire region, enhancing connectivity and boosting economic development.
The government’s expansion plan for the airport is both comprehensive and ambitious. The existing 1.8-kilometer runway will be extended to 3.9 kilometers, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, including international carriers like the Boeing 747. This expansion is expected to make the airport capable of handling both domestic and international flights, which will significantly improve air travel connectivity to the region.

In addition to runway expansion, the plan includes the construction of a new terminal building, which will be designed to handle increased passenger traffic. The airport will also benefit from modern air traffic control (ATC) facilities, along with the installation of advanced navigational equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations.
To move the project forward, the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department has already reached out to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and the necessary infrastructure designs. Once the plans are finalized, the construction work will begin, bringing Warangal closer to realizing its aspirations of becoming a major transportation hub.
The revival of Mamnoor Airport is seen as a key component in Warangal’s broader transformation. Improved air connectivity is expected to bring in more investment, facilitate tourism, and enhance the district’s economic prospects. The airport’s modernization is expected to integrate Warangal into the broader Telangana growth story, providing vital infrastructure to support the district’s urbanization and development goals.
This project aligns with the Telangana government’s focus on creating world-class infrastructure across the state, mirroring the growth of Hyderabad, which has emerged as a global tech hub. By investing in air transport infrastructure, the government hopes to ensure that Warangal can keep pace with the growing demand for modern urban amenities and services.
The revival of Mamnoor Airport is expected to not only boost Warangal’s connectivity but also act as a catalyst for regional development, offering new opportunities for businesses and residents alike. With the ₹205 crore investment, the airport is poised to become a cornerstone of Warangal’s future growth as a modern urban center in Telangana.
