The Telangana government has prioritized the development of urban lung spaces in the form of ample greenery in and around Hyderabad, while also completing large-scale infrastructure projects such as road widening, the construction of flyovers, underpasses, Road under Bridges (RuBs), and Road over Bridges (ROBs) (RoBs).
As part of this effort, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have launched a number of initiatives in the form of urban-themed parks in the last 12 to 18 months, not only to increase green cover but also to improve the aesthetic.
Aside from the HMDA and GHMC, the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) Urban Forestry wing, which is part of the HMDA, maintains over 63 lakh plants along the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
So far, the GHMC has developed around 20 theme parks under its jurisdiction, with 53 more parks set to open soon, according to senior GHMC officials.
Civil works are currently underway at 27 theme parks, while the development of the remaining lung spaces is in various stages of completion.
A women’s theme park in the LB Nagar zone and Serilingampally zone with women empowerment as a theme will be built, as will a children’s park in each of the Serilingampally, LB Nagar, and Kukatpally zones.
Meanwhile, a Bathukamma park will be built in the Kukatpally area to promote Telangana culture. These theme parks will be in addition to the 75 freedom parks that will be located in different parts of the city.
The GHMC identified 75 open spaces in various parts of the city to be developed as ‘Freedom Parks’ as part of Swatantra Bharata Vajrotsavam 2022.
The HMDA has implemented several environmental conservation measures in order to maintain the green cover. The plants and saplings on the central medians and avenue plantations along the 158 km stretch of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) are embedded with a drip irrigation system that will take care of the plantations’ watering needs.
With a drip irrigation system in place, the HMDA has reduced the cost of manually watering the plants while also eliminating the use of water tankers, which helps to reduce pollution.
