Telangana High Court to State Police: Don’t allow protests without permission

On Wednesday, State High Court Justice K Lalitha ordered the police to take action against organisers who blocked the state and national highways without obtaining permission from the police.

As requested by Chinnolla Naresh Reddy, counsel representing the petitioner, the Judge directed the police authorities of the State to no longer permit protests in public places without prior permission.

In two weeks, the court requested a reply from the Home Department, providing all of the necessary details regarding the cases filed against those who blocked the highways without permission.

A collection of photographs by Naresh Reddy shows an ambulance stalled on a highway due to TRS rasta roko. T Srikanth, GP Home, informed the court that no permission has been obtained from the respondent police authorities when the Judge instructed them to obtain instructions from the respondent police authorities whether rasta roko organisers had previously obtained permission or not.

An action was taken against protesters, according to the HC

Even though the writ petition was filed by way of a House Motion on Tuesday, which was heard by Justice G Radha Rani, no orders were passed by the judge as the Government Pleader (GP) for Home sought some time to get instructions on the issue of “permission from the police” to hold the rasta roko.

As a result, Justice Lalitha took up the case on Wednesday. A GP for Home informed the court, after obtaining instructions from the authorities concerned, that no permission was obtained to stage rasta roko and other agitations, and that action was being taken against those responsible.

Thus, they booked cases against the organisers and there was no untoward incident during the protest. The case has been adjourned for two weeks.
