In a significant move to tackle faculty shortages and enhance academic standards, the Telangana government has raised the retirement age for regular university teachers from 60 to 65 years. This decision, announced by the state’s Higher Education department, applies to teachers on the University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scale at state universities.
The decision follows the recommendations of the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE), which highlighted a persistent shortage of faculty members since the last university recruitment in 2013. According to the council, this shortage has had a negative impact on the quality of education, research output, and the universities’ ability to secure national and international accreditations, such as NAAC, NBA, and NIRF rankings. The retention of experienced faculty members is expected to stabilize the learning environment and uphold academic excellence at state universities.
The new policy aligns with the UGC’s regulations and follows a previous directive from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), which encouraged states to adopt revised UGC pay scales and policies. Telangana had previously implemented the UGC Revised Pay Scales, 2016, for teaching staff under Government Order (GO) 15 in 2019.

In line with this directive, the Telangana government has instructed all university registrars under the Higher Education department to immediately implement the revised retirement policy.
