Telangana Police Arrest Eight in Crackdown on Sankranthi Cockfighting

In a crackdown on unlawful activities during the Sankranthi holiday, eight people were arrested for staging a rooster battle in Yalal Mandal, Vikarabad District, Telangana. Task Force Sub-Inspector Prashanth Vardhan made the arrest and recovered Rs 16,320 from the organizers.

Despite police cautions and prohibitions, cockfighting, an illegal and inhumane pastime, remains popular during Sankranti in areas such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. Crores of rupees change hands as people place big bets on cockfights.

Cockfights feature two roosters equipped with razor-sharp curved blades on their spurs and forced to fight to the death. The winner rooster frequently succumbs to severe injuries acquired during the fight.

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960 makes it a felony to provoke animal fights. Organizing, maintaining, using, or controlling a location for animal fighting is a punishable violation under Section 11(1)(n) of the Act. The searches are intended to prevent not only the brutality done on these animals, but also the criminal activities involved with cockfighting events, such as gambling and the sale of illicit booze.

Humane Society International (HSI) India has urged residents to report cases of cockfighting over the festive season, emphasizing the importance of compassion over such inhumane and illegal practices.

It is worth noting that cockfighting events frequently incorporate child labor, exposing youngsters to extreme aggression against animals and hazardous activities. Children are forced to transport booze and participate in the defeathering and butchering of dead or dying birds, which endangers their physical and mental health. Last year, there were injuries and fatalities, underscoring the risks connected with these illicit activities.
