On Saturday, a suspended Telangana government official was found dead under mysterious circumstances who was arrested in a land scam two years ago.
Sheikhpet’s former Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO), Ch Sujatha, was found dead. The cause of death has not been determined.
She is suspected of committing suicide like her husband, who committed suicide after her arrest in 2020.
Sujatha’s family, however, said she was undergoing treatment for dengue and had suffered a cardiac arrest.
Ajay Kumar, Sujatha’s husband, committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of a five-story residential building in Chikkadpally where his sister lives on June 17, 2020.
Ajay, an assistant professor of political science at Osmania University, took the extreme step after Sujatha was arrested and sent to prison for a land scam.
As a result of a corruption complaint related to over 4,865 square yards of land in upscale Banjara Hills in Hyderabad, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Sujatha on June 8, 2020. Sujatha’s house in Gandhi Nagar had been raided by the ACB, which found gold jewelry and Rs 30 lakh in cash. Previously, she was the MRO for Amberpet and Mushirabad.
In addition, the ACB arrested Revenue Inspector Nagarjuna Reddy for accepting bribes of Rs 15 lakh from complainant Syed Abdul Khalid as well as the Sub-Inspector of Police of Banjara Hills, A. Ravindra Naik for demanding Rs 3 lakh from Khalid and accepted half of it.
The MRO was asked by Khalid to survey the land his father bought in 1969 and update the records.
A market value of Rs 40 crore was estimated for the land. In a police report filed by Sujatha, Khalid was accused of encroaching on government property.
In response to Khalid’s request for resolution, Sujatha referred him to the Revenue Inspector, Nagarjuna Reddy, who demanded a bribe of Rs 30 lakh. The ACB officials laid a trap and caught Nagarjuna Reddy red-handed after receiving the complaint.
The investigations uncovered the participation of MRO Sujatha and the Banjara Hills Sub-Inspector.
