Telangana witnesses gradual decline in malaria cases

Malaria cases are gradually declining in Telangana State. According to the latest data available until December 2022, there has been a significant decrease in malaria cases as a result of various government initiatives focusing on cleanliness and sanitation, such as Palle Pragati and Pattana Pragati, which have played a significant role in disease containment.

The state was officially moved from Category 2 to Category 1 of the National Framework for Malaria Elimination (NFME) in India 2016-30 in April 2022, indicating its transition from pre-eradication to eradication. As per National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Centre Control, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India (GoI), in Telangana, districts such as Suryapet, Nagarkurnool, and Adilabad are showing decrease in surveillance at national level.

The number of blood slides examined, total positive malaria cases, total positive rate, and plasmodium falciparum (severe and life-threatening malaria) cases are among the indicators examined in the report.

When compared to the last three years average cumulative, there is a 29.44 percent increase in blood slide examination and a 62.07 percent decrease in total positive malaria cases up to January 2023. The total positive rate was 0.01 percent through January 2023, compared to 0.02 percent over the previous three years and 0.02 percent through January 2022.

Dr Navodaya Gilla, General Physician was quoted as saying, “Compared to the last two decades there is a significant improvement in surveillance for malaria positive cases in the State of Telangana, and most importantly awareness exists among citizens over malaria disease and its complications. In urban areas, the citizens are quite mindful about the consequences of the disease unlike rural areas.”
