Telangana Women Welcome Free Bus Travel, Conductors Express Concerns

On Saturday, the initiative offering free travel on Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) buses for women residing in Telangana was launched, eliciting widespread joy among female commuters across the state. While women appreciate the scheme, concerns have arisen among conductors regarding the issuance of zero tickets to female passengers.

A commuter named Akkula Surekha expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I travel from Khairatabad to Panjagutta daily. I used to go by Metro, but now I will go by bus. This will help me save around Rs 2,000. I go to my hometown and visit temples regularly. So I can save around Rs 5,000.”

Despite the positive response, some passengers and conductors have raised practical concerns. Sravani from Mehdipatnam suggested, “The TSRTC should buy more buses. During the morning and evening, many students are footboarding. The government could have implemented this scheme after buying some more buses.”

Yogitha Patil of Banjara Hills, while appreciating the scheme, remarked, “This is a good scheme. I used to travel by Metro. This is the first time I am using the bus after many months.”

However, conductors are grappling with the logistics of implementing the initiative. Expressing their concerns, one conductor from Musheerabad depot stated, “There are two types of passengers, bus pass holders and ticket holders. Half the women are using bus passes. So our work can be completed before the next bus stop arrives. But due to this initiative, we have to issue tickets to all passengers. So our workload will increase.”

Another conductor from Barkatpura depot echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that the government should issue passes to all women to streamline the process. As the initiative unfolds, conductors anticipate challenges in managing the ticketing process efficiently.
