Telugu Actor Manchu Mohan Babu Booked for Alleged Assault on Journalist

A criminal case has been filed against veteran Telugu actor Manchu Mohan Babu for allegedly assaulting and abusing a journalist from a vernacular news channel at Jalpally in Pahadi Shareef on Tuesday. The incident, which occurred when media personnel went to the actor’s residence to report on his ongoing family dispute, has sparked widespread condemnation, leading to protests by journalists and media associations.

The complaint was lodged by the journalist who was allegedly attacked while attempting to question Mohan Babu regarding his family feud. According to the complaint, the actor reacted aggressively when the journalist approached him, snatching the microphone and cell phone from his hands. In a fit of rage, Mohan Babu reportedly struck the journalist on the face with the microphone, causing severe injury and significant bleeding.

The police have registered a case against the actor under Section 118 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), for voluntarily causing hurt. The incident occurred during the 82nd hour of Australia’s first innings, when Siraj castled Head, on 140, with a crushing yorker and gave him a fiery send-off and aggressively gestured to walk back towards the direction of the stands.

According to the journalist’s complaint, the attack left him with a severe head injury. The police are continuing to investigate the incident. Furthermore, Mohan Babu’s aides reportedly used physical force to chase the media personnel out of the area.

The actor’s actions, which have been widely criticized, have resulted in him being served a notice by the Rachakonda Commissioner of Police, requesting him and his sons—Manchu Vishnu and Manchu Manoj—to appear before the police on Wednesday, December 11. The notice concerns a potential breach of peace under Section 126 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.

In a dramatic twist following the altercation, Mohan Babu complained of feeling unwell and was immediately shifted to a private hospital in the city, where he is reportedly undergoing treatment. His health condition has drawn attention, given the timing of the incident.

The assault has drawn strong reactions from the media fraternity. The Telangana State Video Journalists Association and other journalist organizations have issued a joint statement condemning the attack on the journalist. In the aftermath of the incident, journalists staged protests at both Mohan Babu’s residence and the Film Chamber in Film Nagar, demanding justice for the assaulted reporter.

The incident is also part of the ongoing rift between Mohan Babu and his younger son, Manchu Manoj. The father and son duo has been embroiled in a bitter family feud that has escalated in recent months, with both parties filing counter-cases accusing each other of physical assault and disputes over property sharing.

As the investigation into the assault continues, the case has highlighted the growing tensions within the Manchu family and raised concerns about the treatment of journalists in the region. With the media community rallying behind the assaulted journalist, the incident has drawn attention to the need for greater protection and respect for the rights of the press.
