With elaborate arrangements in place for the smooth conduct of Ganesh Chaturthi beginning August 31, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is pulling out all the stops.
Around 9,000 sanitation workers will be pressed into service under the jurisdiction of the GHMC to facilitate Ganesh Idol immersion at 280 lakes located throughout the city.
Cranes will be deployed on NTR Marg, Saroornagar Lake, and Sanjeevaiah Park Baby Pond. A dedicated sanitation team will be stationed at each crane in the immersion area, according to GHMC officials.
There will be three shifts for the sanitation workers. A GHMC official said that seven workers will be deployed at each crane and seven to 14 workers will be deployed at each artificial pond based on its size, and 21 sanitation workers will be deployed along the immersion procession route every three kilometers or four kilometers.
As part of its environmental conservation efforts, the GHMC will also take several other measures. In order to accomplish this task, the corporation is setting up artificial ponds throughout the city in order to encourage people to immerse Ganesh idols in them instead of lakes.
In various locations around the city, 24 prefabricated fiber-reinforced plastic ponds will be installed. It is possible to assemble and disassemble these portable ponds, unlike the existing artificial ponds near lakes that were constructed by excavating the ground.
As well as preparing artificial ponds, the GHMC is undertaking massive road restoration, illumination, setting up mobile washrooms, and fogging along the procession route, at idol immersion sites, and at Ganesh pandals that experience heavy foot traffic.
A GHMC official said all work related to road restoration along the procession route would be completed by August 29. Furthermore, the HMWS&SB will provide drinking water at Ganesh idol immersion sites on the third, fifth, seventh, ninth, and eleventh days of the festival.
