New Delhi: The government on Tuesday appointed former Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das as the new RBI Governor, a day after Urjit Patel suddenly resigned.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shaktikanta Das, former Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a period of three years,” an official order said.
Shaktikanata Das, a former economic affairs secretary and a current member of the Fiance Commission, has been named the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Urjit Patel resigned as RBI Governor yesterday on account of personal reasons though his exit was widely seen as an outcome of the rift between the RBI and the government.
Das, a 1980 batch IAS officer from Tamil Nadu cadre, was a member of the Finance Commission of India. Das took charges as Union Revenue secretary in june 2014. His was the first high level bureaucratic rejig in the Finance Ministry after the Narendra Modi-led government took over, an indications of his being in the good books of the prime minister.
Das was aslo the brain behind rolling out of the good and Services TAX (GST). He was instrunmental ins pushing GST soon after the Modi Government took charge. As Revenue secretary, he worked closely with Finance Minister Jaitley and the empowered committee of state finance ministers to break the deadlock and draw up the draft legislations.
