Third Incident in Three Days: Canopy Collapses at Rajkot Airport

In a dramatic incident, a canopy collapsed at the passenger pickup and drop area outside Gujarat’s Rajkot Airport on Saturday amid heavy rainfall. This event occurred just a day after a tragic incident at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-1, where a portion of the roof collapsed.

According to preliminary information, there were no reports of injuries or casualties in the Rajkot incident. Sources from the Ministry of Civil Aviation indicated that the canopy broke during maintenance work aimed at removing accumulated water. Repair work is currently underway, and a detailed report on the incident has been requested.

Gujarat is currently experiencing heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon advances further into the state. With the forecast predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, seven teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed across various districts, including Kutch, Rajkot, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, Narmada, and Valsad.

The collapse at Rajkot Airport comes closely on the heels of a more tragic incident in New Delhi, where a portion of the roof at Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed early on Friday. This incident claimed the life of a 45-year-old cab driver and left eight others injured.

The collapse in Delhi resulted in the indefinite suspension of operations from Terminal 1, which handles approximately 200 flights daily. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates the airport, reported that the roof at the old departure forecourt of Terminal 1 partially collapsed around 5 a.m. on Friday. While the cause of the collapse is still under investigation, it is suspected to be related to heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The back-to-back incidents at two major airports highlight the impact of severe weather conditions on infrastructure and the importance of timely maintenance and safety measures.

Authorities are urging passengers to remain cautious and updated on travel advisories as repair and maintenance work continues in affected areas.
