Traffic Disruptions Expected as 10,000 Women Gather for Bathukamma Celebrations at Tank Bund

The grand Saddula Bathukamma celebrations, set to take place on October 10 at Tank Bund, Hyderabad, are expected to create significant traffic disruptions in the surrounding areas, with 10,000 women participating in the traditional festivities. Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, who chaired a high-level review meeting at the Secretariat, confirmed the arrangements for the event, which promises to be one of the most vibrant cultural showcases in the city.

Starting at 4 PM on October 10, 10,000 thousands of women will carry the floral arrangements of Bathukamma in a grand procession from the Martyrs’ Memorial in front of the Secretariat to Tank Bund. The large-scale event, which will also feature hundreds of artists performing in the rally, is expected to attract a large audience and public representatives, who will join the festivities at a stage set up on the Tank Bund.

Traffic Disruptions and Diversions

Given the sheer scale of the event and the number of participants, heavy traffic disruptions are anticipated around Tank Bund and adjacent areas. Roads leading to the Necklace Road, Secretariat, and Sanjeevaiah Park will likely face major congestion. Traffic diversions and barricading will be implemented to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles, but city residents are advised to avoid these routes, especially during the evening hours.

With thousands of women expected to participate from nearby colonies and localities, commuters traveling around key intersections, including those on Tank Bund Road, Necklace Road, and surrounding roads, may face extended delays. Additional traffic will likely be concentrated around the Children’s Park area, where special arrangements have been made for Bathukamma immersion at the Bathukamma Ghat.

To minimize chaos, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), alongside the Hyderabad Traffic Police, has planned traffic diversions, but officials warned that delays are inevitable due to the scale of the event. Commuters are advised to plan their travel in advance or consider alternate routes to avoid being caught in the traffic jams.

Cultural Showcase and Festive Charm

Despite the anticipated traffic challenges, the Bathukamma celebrations promise to be an unforgettable spectacle. The event will feature elaborate decorations, with 150 major junctions across the city adorned with Bathukamma floral arrangements and illuminated with lights to add a festive charm to Hyderabad. In addition, a special fireworks display and laser show will be held from the Buddha Statue and Sanjeevaiah Park, drawing large crowds to these iconic locations.

Safety and Amenities for Participants

To ensure the smooth conduct of the event, authorities have promised to make all necessary arrangements, including barricading, traffic diversions, and provision of basic amenities like drinking water and restrooms along the route. Santhi Kumari has instructed that each department assign a senior officer to oversee the arrangements, ensuring the safety and comfort of participants and attendees.

Special care has been taken to facilitate the immersion of Bathukamma floral arrangements at designated ghats, including the Bathukamma Ghat near Children’s Park and Necklace Road. The Commissioner of Police CV Anand, GHMC Commissioner Amrapali Kata, and Health Secretary Dr. Christina Z Chongthu were among the key officials who participated in the meeting to finalize the arrangements.

Advisory for Residents

Residents of Hyderabad are advised to take note of the traffic restrictions and avoid traveling through Tank Bund and the surrounding areas if possible. Those participating in or attending the event should plan their journey in advance, use public transport if possible, and follow the directions of the traffic police to avoid unnecessary delays.

The Bathukamma celebration, a vibrant part of Telangana’s cultural heritage, marks the culmination of the nine-day floral festival and brings together women from across the state in a collective display of devotion and festivity. However, with such large numbers expected, city authorities have emphasized the need for cooperation from the public to ensure a smooth and joyous event.
