Tragic Landslide in Nepal: Two Buses Swept Away, Dozens Feared Missing

Early Friday morning, a devastating landslide along Nepal’s Narayanghat-Mugling road in Chitwan district swept away two buses carrying a total of 65 passengers, with at least seven Indian nationals among them. The incident occurred at Simaltal area, pushing the buses into the swollen Trishuli River.

Officials, including Chief District Officer Indradev Yadav, confirmed the tragic accident involving the Kathmandu-bound Angel bus and the Ganpati Deluxe heading to Gaur from the capital. Of the 65 passengers, three managed to escape from the Ganpati Deluxe bus by jumping out, as reported by The Kathmandu Post.

Rescue efforts have been underway since the early hours, with authorities identifying the missing Indian nationals as Santosh Thakur, Surendra Sah, Adit Miyaan, Sunil, Shahnawaj Alam, Ansari, and one unidentified person. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has directed immediate search and rescue operations, expressing deep sorrow over the incident and urging precautionary measures amid ongoing monsoon-related disasters.

In related incidents, landslides and floods triggered by heavy rains in Kaski district claimed the lives of at least 11 individuals on Thursday alone. The Narayanghat-Mugling road remains obstructed by debris, complicating rescue efforts as Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel continue their missions to assist affected areas.

Over the past decade, monsoon disasters have resulted in over 1,800 fatalities, with hundreds more missing and injured across the country, underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by seasonal weather patterns.
