In a rare and heartwarming moment of compassion and coexistence, a train in Jharkhand came to a complete halt for nearly two hours to allow a wild elephant to safely deliver her calf on the railway tracks. The extraordinary event, captured on video, shows the mother elephant and her newborn eventually walking off the tracks unharmed.
The incident has been widely lauded on social media and by officials. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav shared the video on platform X (formerly Twitter), calling it a powerful example of “human-animal harmonious existence.”
“Beyond the news of human-animal conflicts, happy to share this example of compassion in action,” Yadav wrote, adding, “It is lovely to see the efforts producing such heartwarming results. Special kudos to Jharkhand Forest Department officials for their sensitivity and timely action that enabled the elephant to safely give birth.”

The train was stopped after railway and forest officials spotted the elephant in distress and took prompt steps to ensure a safe environment around her. The forest team monitored the scene until the elephant and her calf moved away safely into the forest.
Highlighting the broader context, the Union Minister noted that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways, has identified over 110 sensitive wildlife zones across the country. This comes after surveying 3,500 kilometers of railway tracks, especially those intersecting with forested areas and wildlife corridors.
The initiative aims to prevent tragic accidents involving wild animals, especially elephants, which frequently cross railway tracks in India’s dense forests.
