Dr. Ruth Paul John Koyyala, MBBS, will be the first transgender person admitted to the MD Emergency Medicine program at ESI Hospital. Dr. Koyyala, who is currently a medical officer at the state-run Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) unit dealing with HIV/AIDS, has overcome major obstacles to get to this stage.
Dr. Koyyala, who comes from a modest farming family in Khammam, has endured persecution since infancy because of her transsexual status. Despite this, she persisted and earned her MBBS from Hyderabad’s Malla Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences.
After being turned down by over 20 hospitals owing to her transgender status, Dr. Koyyala landed a job as a medical officer at Mitr, USAID’s transgender clinic in Hyderabad, in 2020. This part-time employment, offered by TSACS and OGH, became her main source of income.
In 2021, Dr. Koyyala’s life took a favorable turn when she qualified for the National Eligibility Cumulative Entrance Test (NEET-PG). During counselling, she was first shortlisted under the female category, but her transsexual status and mismatched paperwork caused difficulty. Dr. B Nagender, Superintendent at OGH, began a campaign to help her pay the expenses, with contributions from OGH staff and the Helping Hand Foundation.
Dr. Koyyala is now on her way to becoming the first transgender person admitted to the MD Emergency Medicine program at ESI Hospital, which will be a significant milestone not only for her but also for transgender representation and growth in the medical industry.
